Rotary Tree of Remembrance

The Christmas season always brings to mind those we hold close to our hearts, those who we miss dearly.

Every year since 2003 and over a two-week period leading up to Christmas Day, the Rotary Clubs of Bishopstown & Cork, with help from Cork City Council, have been running the Rotary Tree of Remembrance project in the heart of the City.

The Rotary Tree of Remembrance provides a space, time, and a method for loved ones to be remembered in a very special way while at the same time raising funds for local charities.

Yellow ribbons with a message, or the name of a loved one are placed on the tree for members of the public, while they support local charities through a donation of their choice.

The people of Cork and visitors to our city, young and old, have embraced the concept so generously. They press ‘pause’ in their hectic schedules to stop at our beautiful Tree outside Brown Thomas to remember absent loved ones at a very special time of year, a time when families and friends would normally come together.

The Rotary Tree of Remembrance has become very much a part of Christmas in Cork and very much part of the spirit of Christmas for the people of Cork.

Over the years many local Charities have been supported through this project. Charities such as Marymount Hospice, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Westgate Foundation, Tabor Lodge, Edel House, Irish Kidney Association and many others.

The project concludes in early January with an ecumenical prayer service when all those remembered on The Rotary Tree of Remembrance are prayed for.
